ABSTRACT

And he is as right about there being nothing like sports leagues as he is wrong about the nature of competition. But, as anybody who follows the business side of pro sports knows, the claim of “keeping enterprises in business on an equal basis” also rings hollow. Leagues maximize profit by purposely keeping teams on an unequal basis on the field because league revenues are higher when those teams that generate the highest revenues are allowed to do so. And, as demonstrated throughout this chapter, there is no evidence at all that such a motivation even remotely enters into league actions toward any teams except those in the league.
