ABSTRACT

When TiVo was founded in August 1997, it began a revolution in the home-entertainment industry. TiVo was a pioneer of the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) technology, allowing consumers to effortlessly record TV programs onto a hard drive. Viewers could then pause and “instantly replay” live TV and fast-forward through previously recorded programs. DVRs were an emerging consumer electronics category that changed the way that consumers experienced television. DVR technology had the potential to disrupt the balance of players and change the landscape of the home-entertainment industry.
