Cultivating and Sustaining Empathy as a Normative Value in Public Administration

This past year I was diagnosed with cancer. As New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof (2010) noted in a column that appeared at roughly the same time as my own diagnosis, 41 percent of Americans now are diagnosed with some form of cancer. As with many cancer patients, the diagnosis came suddenly and treatment followed swiftly.
