THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE ROANOAKE colony did not prevent the English from trying again to secure a foothold in North America. There was national glory to be gained by planting the flag on American soil, and England had no desire to see the New World divided between Spain and France. But another important motive for the early English attempts at colonization was money.
