ABSTRACT

Fun and Games For the ancient Chinese, fun and games were an important part of life, even if the majority of people had very little free time to enjoy themselves. Most Chinese had to work all day, every day, and they did not have days off. Instead, leisure was confined to national festivals, the biggest of which was the celebration that marked the Chinese New Year. The early dynasties celebrated the New Year, but not at the same time of year. It was only during the Oin Dynasty (221-206 B.C.E.) that First Emperor Oin changed the date so that the NewYear was celebrated on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which is around late January or early February.
