ABSTRACT

This chapter examines two cases from producers of durable consumer goods: a large watch manufacturer and a tire manufacturer. Both firms are located in Moscow, affording these producers a range of strategic and tactical opportunities unavailable to firms outside the capital. As we will see, despite the fact that the two firms produce durable goods that are for the most part destined for final consumers, they have had very different transition experiences. The watch manufacturer has endured the transition in a manner that is nearly identical to that of the firms in light industry, while the tire manufacturer has done remarkably well, almost as well as the firms in the food industry examined in the following chapter. The cases are somewhat unique in that all interviews were with the same respondents, who were exceptionally forthcoming in their responses.
