ABSTRACT
CentralandSouthernAfrica TheregionwehavedefinedasCentralandSouthern Africacovers,asTable54shows,anareaofmore than24 millionsquarekilometres,nearlyseventimeslargerthan NorthernandWesternEurope,andcomparableinsizeto Asia.Ithasacomparativelylowpopulationdensity,however:lessthanaquarterofthatofNorthernandWestern EuropeandlessthanafifthofthatofAsia.Lyingmostly betweentheTropicofCancerandtheTropicof Capricornitenjoysamainlytropicalorsubtropicalclimate,althoughmarkedvariationscanbefoundbetween theAtlanticandIndianOceancoastsandbetweenthe mountainousandlow-lyingareas.Thegreatmajorityof theinhabitantsoftheregionareindigenousblack Africans.EveninSouthAfricaonlyabout21%ofthe populationisnotofblackethnicstock.
