ABSTRACT

Mary Katherine Goddard and her mother, SARAH UPDIKE GODDARD, were among the first women to publish newspapers and run printing businesses in the United States. Mary Katherine, who was born in 1738 in Connecticut, and her older brother William were brought up in the business. One of Goddard’s most important contributions occurred in January 1777, when Congress authorized her to print the first copy of the Declaration of Independence that included the names of those who had signed it.
