ABSTRACT

The ninteenth century has often beenthought of as a time when women werecaught up in domestic life and in observing the dicates of convention. Although true for many women, this impression is contradicted by many others. VICTORIA WOODHULL ran for president of the United States. HARRIET TUBMAN escaped from slavery and returned 19 times to lead others to safety, and ELIZABETH CADY STANTON, SUSAN B. ANTHONY, and other leaders launched a WOMEN’S RIGHTS MOVEMENT that continues to this day.
