HALE, SARAH JOSEPHA BUELL (1788-1879) Author and editor of GODEY’S LADY’S BOOK. Sarah J. Buell was born on October 24, 1788, in New Hampshire. She was educated at home by her parents. Her brother, Horatio, attended Dartmouth College, and, with his encouragement, Sarah became a teacher. She married a lawyer named David Hale, but he died of pneumonia in 1822, leaving her with four children to rear.
