ABSTRACT

Kearney’s great interest, however, was the cause of TEMPERANCE. In 1889, she met temperance reformer FRANCES WILLARD and became deeply involved in the goals of the organization. After two years of local antialcohol work in Mississippi, she became a national organizer for the WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION (WCTU). From the early 1890s until 1912 she traveled frequently around the country giving lectures against alcohol. Kearney also became deeply involved in the woman SUFFRAGE movement during this time, as did a number of those who worked for temperance.
