ABSTRACT

MOTT, LUCRETIA COFFIN (1793-1880) Reformer. Lucretia Coffin was born on Nantucket Island to Thomas, a sea captain, and his wife, Anna. Like many women on the island, Anna managed the family and the family business on her own while her husband was away at sea. Thus, it was no surprise that Lucretia became one of the nation’s earliest and most influential defenders of the rights of women.
