ABSTRACT

Sudan’s civil wars, which have raged intermittently for nearly fifty years, have been the result of the complex religious and ethnic subdivisions that exist within Sudanese society. By the twentieth century, the Sudanese were divided among nineteen major ethnic groups, spoke dozens of different languages, and followed three different religious traditions.
