ABSTRACT
Filipino Americans maintain a strong and proud sense of ethnic identity, supported by many local organizations and activities. One of the most notable activities is the Philippine Independence Day Parade held each year in New York City. Usually held on the first Sunday in June, it is said to be the biggest celebration of Philippine independence outside the Philippines. The parade route runs along Manhattan’s Madison Avenue from Twenty-third to Fortieth Street. Festivities leading up to the parade include a beauty and talent contest, a youth festival, the independence ball, Consul General night, and Grand Marshal night. The parade itself typically features some eighty groups, with marching bands, floats, and Filipino American beauty queens riding in open cars. Holding the parade in the very heart of New York City is a source of pride to both organizers and participants, and it is a manifestation of the nation’s acceptance and recognition of the Filipino American community.
