ABSTRACT

Almost every beach on the island has designated surfing areas. Waves for surfing are made possible by more than ten miles of sandbank offering endless beachbreaks, only occasionally interrupted by groins. Shifting sandbars and jetties, however, also mean that waves come and go; most surfers claim that fall is the best season for surfing waves. A surfing subculture is apparent, with lore about legendary surfers and competitions at Smith Point.
