ABSTRACT
MA¨ RCHEN Folklorists use the term ma¨rchen (German for “little story,” or wonder tale) to designate the oral equivalent of the literary fairy tale: a multiepisodic fantasy narrative typically featuring a single hero or heroine who uses cunning or magical help to defeat a supernatural opponent (often a giant or witch in British American traditions), winning wealth or a mate and coming of age in the process.
