ABSTRACT
Lacking neighborhood halls, recently arrived Baltimoreans found a place for their music and dance just outside the city in a host of summer picnic grounds and music parks. Sunset Ranch, New River Ranch, and Blob’s Park became weekend escapes from the city’s heat and bad air. They also served as regional meeting grounds, linking Baltimore musicians and music lovers with their Philadelphia, Washington, and Wilmington, Delaware, counterparts.
