ABSTRACT

RUSSIAN COMMUNITIES A highly diverse group, Russians may be categorized by religious affiliation; the largest groups are Orthodox Christians, Jews, Pentecostal Christians, Baptists, and Sectarians. There are significant subgroups within each faith, not to mention

the many Russians who claim “nonreligious” status. The earliest significant settlements and still the largest population of Russian-born Americans are located in the New York metropolitan area (52,000), especially the boroughs of the Bronx and Brooklyn (including a heavy recent concentration in Brighton Beach); Portland, Oregon (40,000); Los Angeles (23,000); San Francisco (19,000); Seattle (9,000); and Minneapolis (5,000).
