SKATEBOARDERS Being a skateboarder, colloquially known as a “skater”—one who rides a narrow platform called a “deck” with wheels in a standing or crouching position-is, for many, more than a recreational pursuit. It has been a source of identity associated since the late twentieth century with adolescent boys who use a distinctive speech, dress in a certain way, and meet in places such as “skate parks” suited to their pastime.
