ABSTRACT

Tulsa’s Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, also known as the Gilcrease Museum of Art, boasts the world’s largest collection of art pertaining to the American West. The collection includes works by Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, and George Catlin, along with numerous Native American artifacts and other Americana dating back to the time of Columbus. Thomas Gilcrease was one-eighth Creek Indian and made his fortune in the oil boom. He sold his collection of more than two hundred thousand items to the city, and supported the museum in its efforts to become a major center for traditional as well as modern arts.
