ABSTRACT

Outlaw bikers have the reputation of being adventurous and rebellious, but they have also advocated for various political and social causes. During the Vietnam War, bikers sided with the establishment and often interfered with antiwar protestors. Many of them had been in the military and modeled the social structure and bonding of military units in their clubs. Many also proudly proclaimed their adherence to traditional American values-an adventurous, pioneering spirit and the persona of the rugged, free individual. Advocacy for removing state laws requiring helmets has been part of this worldview, since many outlaw bikers believe the issue to be one of individual choice (and “liberty”) in which government should not interfere.
