ABSTRACT

One reported trend among engaged couples in the United States and Canada is to create a fantasy, liminal space for the transition from being single to entering marriage. To some extent the same is true of the engagement phase of courtship. Once a formal commitment is made to ending the courtship phase and moving forward, a series of rituals and traditions guide the engaged couple as they plan their perfect wedding. As with other stages in modern courtship, weddings are becoming more and more a reflection of the particular couple and their unique relationship.
