ABSTRACT

Abstract: Advancements in information technologies (IT) have prompted countries around the globe to upgrade their national IT infrastructures to stay ahead in the global competition. The emerging IT infrastructures also provide opportunities for governments to enhance their e-government services. In this study we assess the efforts of four countries in the Asia Pacific region-China, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea-to deploy the next-generation IT infrastructures. These countries have made considerable investments in IT and are actively promoting their e-government efforts. The study begins with an overview of the national IT strategy guiding IT deployment in each of the countries. This is followed by an in-depth examination of their current deployment of the emerging IT infrastructures for both wireless and wired broadband technologies. The implications of these emerging IT infrastructures for future e-government applications to make them ubiquitous, robust, and tailored to users’ needs, are discussed.
