ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about writing all kinds of proposals. In the proposal, one describes the problem or opportunity he or she sees, and then explains how his or her ideas or plans can solve that problem or respond positively to that opportunity. The proposals can be categorized as either informal or formal. The informal proposals are usually sent to other people within one's own department or agency. The formal proposals, though sometimes sent to people in the same department or agency are most often sent to people in another organization. The informal proposals tend to be less structured than formal ones and also tend to be very brief. Formal proposals differ from informal proposals in that they describe problems and solutions that are broader in scope. Formal proposals are also usually intended for a broader audience, so the writer must be especially careful to use impersonal and objective language throughout the document.
