ABSTRACT

At the beginning of 2006 a flurry of news items reported on a Chinese map of the world purported to be a 1763 copy of a map first made in 1418. It showed the various continents of the world with a reasonable amount of accuracy, suggesting that Chinese navigators were circumventing the globe well before the much-celebrated European “Age of Discovery.”
