ABSTRACT
ECONOMIC GROWTH has had a complex and contradictory impact on the evolution of the Malaysian political regime, in some ways contributing to the inclination to impose more authoritarian controls and in other ways strengthening the democratic resistance. This admixture has led one observer to characterize Malaysia's political system as "repressive-responsive" (Crouch 1996).
