ABSTRACT

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) research focuses on two main areas of science: pure science and applied science. Scientists are also working to develop DNA vaccines for such diseases as the bird flu, West Nile virus, and anthrax. Over the years, they have found ways to fight disease, clean up the environment, solve crimes, identify relationships between people and other living things, save endangered species, and study fossils. DNA computers are smaller and faster than any computer ever made, and they are environmentally friendly. Scientists believe that DNA vaccines are much safer to use than traditional vaccines. DNA tests identify a person who is carrying a mutation and is unaware of it. Gene therapy has been used to cure people with a gene mutation that causes them to regularly get fungal and bacterial infections. Scientists are also using DNA forensics to trace family ancestries in humans, plants, and animals.
