ABSTRACT

A collaborative project with a subject expert will allow the archivist to gain important knowledge of matters relating to the collections used in the project, including background information, as well as a better understanding of the physical items themselves. Tenure and promotion positions for academic librarians and archivists are not ubiquitous, but for many librarians and archivists working in an academic setting throughout the United States, tenure and promotion are a matter of course. There are many exciting opportunities for tenure-track archivists working in academic special collections libraries. Digital projects requires new and specific skill sets, skills that have traditionally run counter to the range of expertise of the special collections librarian or archivist, with the use of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) as well as the mounting of digital collections and exhibits on the World Wide Web, it is clear that people are in a watershed moment.
