ABSTRACT

Research method assessed the degree to which products of digital scholarship are used in the tenure, promotion, and reviews processes of history departments in the United States. Formal historical research has traditionally been the backbone of the tenure, promotion, and reviews process in most academic history departments. Information technology is starting to challenges the traditional academic culture. Scientists, humanists, historians, and artists all exist within the walls of universities, but they all conduct research in different ways depending upon the norms of their disciplines. The strength of universities comes from the cultural diversity. The challenge for national associations is to help create broad-based polices that will further scholarship and teaching, providing community-based support for those working in digital scholarship. The Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Association for History and Computing policies mentioned. Part of cultural change is a shift brought on by younger faculty members replacing older ones as they retire.
