Babbage, Charles (1792-1871) English mathematician who designed a machine (called the analytical engine) that he claimed would be capable of carrying out complex operations. Although he never built even a working model of the machine, lacking appropriate technology and funding, its principles of design foreshadowed the modern computer. His book Economy of Machines and Manufactures (1832) became the basis of the field of study known today as operational research.
