ABSTRACT
Colonial rule of Jamaica began under the Spanish when Christopher Columbus discovered the island on his second voyage in 1494. Arawak Indians, the original inhabitants of the island, gave Columbus a hostile reception, but they soon began to trade fresh provisions for Spanish trinkets.
