ABSTRACT
Demeter was convinced that Arethusa had seen Persephone, and she set off straight away for Mount Olympus. There, she demanded that Zeus should rescue her daughter without delay. Zeus agreed to send Hermes down to the underworld, but he reminded Demeter of Hades' one unbreakable rule. Anyone who had ever tasted the food of the dead had to stay in the underworld forever.
