ABSTRACT
The Greek language reflects the different status
of the bride and groom. When a Greek man
announced that he was going to become a
husband he would say, “I will marry this
woman.” However, a Greek girl had to use a
different form of the verb “to marry.” She was
not allowed to have an active part in what was
to happen-instead of also saying, “I will
marry,” she had to say, “I will be married to
this man.” This passive form of the verb
reflected the passive role of the woman in
marriage ceremonies.
