ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the remembrances of Ch'en Heng-che's elder aunt. The chapter reminiscence, which recounts how her favorite aunt helped her through a personal crisis, they catch a glimpse of the melancholy existence of an exceptionally talented woman in a society with few outlets for those talents, and they see some of the ways women supported each other in the narrow world within which they were confined. They also see some elasticity in the patriarchical family system. Her paternal grandparents had twelve children. This aunt was their eldest daughter and my father was their youngest son. she tall and energetic, but she also had an abundance of talents and an outstanding moral character. Her talent was not limited to the kind associated with so-called talented women, writing poems about balmy breezes and moonlit nights. Besides writing poetry, having a knowledge of history, write ancient-style calligraphy, she also knew how to write prescriptions for medicine and was an excellent cook.
