ABSTRACT

Kao-ch'ang was a state, established in the middle of the ninth century in the Turfan region (Sinkiang). The people of this state were of Uigur origin, and in general they were devoted to agriculture and animal husbandry. They excelled in wood carving and mural painting, and the state was known as a center of art and education in Turkestan. During the Yuan period (1280-1368) Kao-ch'ang was absorbed and came under the direct administration of the Mongols until the beginning of the fourteenth century, when it became part of the Chaghatai Khanate ~-@JtJ1f~ (except the Khanate was overthrown in 1365 by the Timurid Emirate under Timur).
