ABSTRACT
In China, modem children's literature began in the early twentieth century. It was written by the first generation of great modem writers such as Lu Xun, Ye Shengtao and Mao Dun. There were, of course, books for children long before this. But these were elementary primers within the Confucian education system, rejected by modem reformers.
