ABSTRACT

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Asahigraph and PWR avoided publishing photographs of Chinese enemy soldiers or their military or political leaders, which might have only aroused suspicions in the West or be put to use by the Chinese press in its anti-Japanese imaging war. The Japanese media instead focused on positive images from China showing the wonderful progress being made under Japanese guidance. These positive images were in turn part of the Japanese government's imaging war against the Western powers, one aimed at winning over Westerners to the Japanese cause in Asia.
