ABSTRACT

This black-and-white poster uses the written character to dramatic advantage. The main text is white lettering against a black background, with the names of Guadalcanal and Attu in a deliberate, crude hand, as if written by a finger in drops of blood. In August 1942, Japanese troops on Guadalcanal had fought with a ferocity that shocked Allied personnel. Of three Japanese garrisons that fought on Guadalcanal, only fifteen men were taken prisoner.
