ABSTRACT

Although most case study research is constructed around an in-depth analysis of a single case, multicase designs are also quite common. Multicase designs either compare one case against another or involve analysis of more than one case collectively in an effort to attain even greater understanding of the phenomenon of interest. Comparative public management cases are by intent all multicase studies (Jun 1976 and 2000; Kaarbo and Beasley 1999). Multicase designs are introduced in this chapter, and the process of carrying out multicase research is discussed in greater detail in the following chapter.
