ABSTRACT

Abstract: Despite the widespread espousal of business process reengineering (BPR) in organizations, there have been divergent viewpoints on the process of reengineering and, in particular, on the role of information technology (IT) in BPR. The purpose of this chapter is to shed some light on the latter issue by examining the relationship between BPR and an emergent type of IT-namely, enterprise resource planning systems. We use a case study at Texas Instruments to evaluate commonly held notions about BPR and use the lessons learned to discuss the future prospects of BPR.
