ABSTRACT

The field of adult education is no different than other academic areas in higher education by failing to include the contributions of significant African American figures of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. When examining the history of the United States it is important to recognize the legacy of racism in society. The impact of cultural hegemony has led to a failure to recognize the rights and privileges of certain US citizens based on their ancestry. Social stratification has resulted in an inequality of opportunity for minority groups to participate in society. One solution for assisting the successful adjustment of African Americans in society was through the development and participation of educational programs. In order to address the omission in research, this chapter examines the contributions of Malcolm X to the field and function of adult education for African Americans. Malcolm X is a significant figure to African American culture in the late twentieth century.
