ABSTRACT

Born on Monday, October 18, 1875, 1 into the Fante 2 ethnic group of the former Gold Coast 3 , young Kodwo Kwegyir Aggrey 4 grew up to become an internationally known educator, an advocate of racial harmony, 5 a noble Christian gentleman, and one of the beloved sons of Africa. Although his mother, Abna Andua, came from a royal family, Kodwo 6 Kwegyir, his father was neither royal family nor rich, but was a respected spokesman of the local chief 7 (Musson 1938, 9; Smith 1971, 15; Ofosu-Appiah 1968, 13).
