ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita, which includes details about her experiences during her grandfather's death. Carolina grandpa got sick. The doctors say Grandpa had affected by kidney infection. The doctor who treated Grandpa was Dr. Jose da Cunha. Carolina was filled with pity hearing the moans. And Carolina asks the Devil to take the sickness away from Grandpa. Carolina thought, "Grandpa came to the world before, and I came after". Carolina Uncle Joao went out to buy bread for the people who were keeping watch over Grandpa's deathbed. Grandpa was a wretch. Carolina wanted Grandpa to explain to her what death was like. On August 27, 1927, Grandpa died. As time went by, Carolina began to forget Grandpa, who was the most handsome black man she ever saw in my life.
