ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita, which includes details about her experiences about the mistress. Carolina went to work on Mr. Nhonho Rasa's farm and he was deaf. When the mistress goes to the city, Carolina goes along to take care of the children. Carolina wish was to live in the city, to go to the movies. Carolina's dream was to dance to the music of the jazz band Bico Doce, from Ribeirao Preto. When Carolina told Dona Fiica that she wanted to leave, Dona Fiica did not appreciate it and asked her, "What is it that you are lacking here? Tell me what you want and I'll take care of it". Carolina thought, to ask her to buy clothes. Dona Fiica buys them, Carolina have to stay with her. Carolina felt like Dona Fiica had taken a course in being a mistress. Dona Fiica paid her, she divided the money with her mother.
