ABSTRACT

The Xodjali catastrophe of February 26-27, 1992 joined the Baku Massacre of January 19-20, 1990 as one of the two most resonant dates on the nationalist calendar of Azerbaijan. There would be others in the future, too, but the result always seemed to be the same: rather than forge unity in the face of tragedy, political adversaries began charging each other with shortterm political gain based on treason. Satkinlig, or 'selloutness,' rapidly became the standard political libel thrown around by one and all.
