ABSTRACT

In the early 2000s, the stock market collapsed when faltering economies, could not support the stratospheric prices of the late 1990s. Many analysts attribute part of the downturn to the cataclysmic collapse of the overvalued stock markets that began in 2000. Late 2008 was characterized by incredibly large swings in stock markets as the economy tried to work its way through the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System (NASDAQ) was founded in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), who divested ownership in 2001, and now was operated by the NASDAQ Stock Market, a publicly traded corporation. The market regulation is performed under contract of the NASDAQ Stock Market, the International Securities Exchange, and the Chicago Climate Exchange. Companies that issue publicly traded shares of stock are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which was created by the Securities and Exchange Act of 1934.
