ABSTRACT

Census, U.S. Pursuant to Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, the federal government counts the population every ten years through a regular census as a way of apportioning political representation. Very early on, the country started asking about immigration status, and through twenty-three censuses, it has collected data on the size and demographic characteristics of the immigrant population. While the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services provides data on the legal status and flows of immigrants, the U.S. Census Bureau provides the statistical portrait of who the immigrants are.
