ABSTRACT

Sara Cleveland is known as one of the country’s most prolific folksingers, buther storytelling arts have gone largely unacknowledged. In some ways, it is easy to see how one could overlook her stories, for her musical repertoire, embracing more than 400 songs, was so extensive that she could sing for days on end without repeating herself. Among this vast cache of tunes were 189 that she labeled “old traditional songs”; these were passed down largely within her family tradition, and they reflect the family’s Irish roots.
