ABSTRACT

This letter was written at a crucial point in the relationship between the young Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. Du Bois was professor at Atlanta University and an increasingly prominent scholar. Washington had been recruiting Du Bois for the faculty at Tuskegee for several years. In this letter Du Bois asks instead for Washington to help him get the job of assistant superintendent of colored schools in Washington, D. C. When Du Bois failed to get this job, he blamed it on Washington's political machinations; it was one element that soured relations between the two men. This letter can be found in the Booker T. Washington Papers, Library of Congress, container 170; it also has been reprinted in BTW Papers 3: 44~4.
