ABSTRACT

By 1904 the philosophical differences between Du Bois and Washington were clearly defined. This letter, written to white civil rights supporter Oswald Garrison Villard, provided evidence to support the charge that Du Bois had made in print two months earlier that Washington used "hush money" to buy the support of African American newspaper editors and thereby take control of the black press, using it to undermine or silence his critics. The dozen "exhibits" included in the original letter were supposed to document he charges. While Villard was not convinced by these charges, the incident deepened the rift between Du Bois and Washington. This letter can be found in the Oswald Garrison Villard Papers, Harvard University; it also has been reprinted in BTW Papers 8: 224-29.
